If you're going to get an Axis get the A-L version, not the X-L (the footboards are longer) and replace the sonic hammer beaters. When I played Axis, I found that the Pearl quad beaters (flat plastic side) were the most effective for me.

I didn't think Sonic Hammers were that bad----that is until about two weeks ago when I swapped them with Trick beaters (courtesy of "jaundiced" here) and realized I should have replaced years ago (like at my first impulse too, when my shoelaces caught on the beater, flipped it around, and sent it through my bass drum head)
It might of sounded like a good idea on paper to have an adjustable beater like the sonic hammer-it just doesn't work

I like the dw and the cobra beaters. last double pedal I had I used those. had the wood rubber and felt disks. used the wood mostly, for the definition. I'm using the stock dw beaters with my current 5002 and they feel great. I've thought about going out and getting the cobra beaters or maybe the trick ones, but these seem to be working just fine for the moment.
