Post Pearl Masters
I have a chance to buy a Pearl Masters Custom kit but was made when they were using ISS Mounts and Triple flange hoops. I wonder if anyone knows about these drums?

The price is great! I would probably put RIMS mounts on them.
I assume they are as good as recently made Masters...aren't they?

They probably sustain and resonate better with the Triple flange hoops.

Any knowledgeable feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks

Thanks dude...I have Newer Masters too. Maybe they're not called ISS...there the ones they use on the Exports. They used to use them on the Masters too.
This is a kit from the early '90s.
It's a Pearl Masters Custom kit but it was made when they were using different Mounts and Triple flange hoops. I wonder if anyone knows about these drums?
I was hoping that one of the drum building experts or vintage drum guys would give me some feedback about this model and year.
Also, I wanted to know what precautions to take when inspecting the shells.
I'm afraid that there's something wrong with them 'cause they're cheap.
The price is great!
Any knowledgeable feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks

If they sound great just buy them. If there's a drum in the set that doesn't fit in with the sound of the overall kit think again. Check for scratches and rusty bits and that the Bass Drum spurs are solid. At the end of the day it's all about the sound so use your ears.

Yeah but...this is a Masters Custom, Maple.
The sizes and finish are a little wierd... 24" kick, 8", 10" 12" 14" toms.
No 16" with a 24" kick is kinda weird.
Also, they're from the early 90s
It's a weird color too.

but for $600

Thank You everybody for your feedback

BE CAREFUL!

Pearl Masters Customs were introduced in 2007 and I can't find ANY reference to them existing as early as the 90's, I'll keep going through reference material, but something is fishy here... very fishy indeed

Thanks Zen,
I went over there today.
*They have the Masters Custom Maple badge on them.
*The tom mount has a single post into the bass drum with 2 tom arms into that. This was before Pearl used the 2 single posts into the kick drum.
*ISS mounts were used on Masters
*triple flange hoops were used
*They appear to be the 4 ply shells with reinforcement hoops.
*The lug screws on the kick are T rods.

I brought a flashlight...the edges seemed ok but 2 of the toms had a wrinkle when I evenly tensioned them a half turn.

They had remo heads that fit fine...they weren't tight.

The sizes are 8" 10" 12" 16" longer shells with a 24" kick

Hello Zen-drummer.

I'm afraid you're wrong about the Masters Custom being introduced in 2007. My set is from 1996, a MMX Masters Custom full maple set, in natural maple (#102) and with gold hardware. Triple flanged hoops and ISS. Brilliant sound and never even thought of replacing them..!!
I think "Steaky" said the right thing.

This is Ironic.
I have Masters Studio and a Gretsch Catalina Maple kit.
When I saw the used Masters Custom, I started thinking about getting them as my 2nd kit as a replacement for the Gretsch.
I love the Gretsch but I thought i would have a used, high end kit instead.
Now I don't know if I want to do through with it.
Who knows what could be wrong with those Masters. They were in pretty rough cosmetic shape.

Hello Drumur.

Funny to reply to you on two topics...
About the Masters: I'd keep the Gretsch. I really think it's a good set and (at least for me) it's very versatile because you can leave a tom or two, if neccesary..
And I really think the sound is close to the Masters Custom. As I wrote, I'm quite happy now that the "floortom-problem" is solved.
And the recordings you made sound nice, IMHO...!!

Cheers, C.

I Saw some vids on youtube of a man playing Blink 182 on this set (Not in the sizes you want and it sounded really cool)

I have never been a Pearl fan - don't know why, but these are excellent drums! If you like the way they sound and can afford them, go for it!
