I personally prefer Tama. But that's what is great about playing the drums. Everyone has a different opinion, and every drumset is different. If everyone had a Pearl, or everyone had DW, then it would be boring. Don't listen to your friends. If you like Pearls drums, play 'em!

This is a detailed comparison of many many different drum sets from Pearl, Tama, and DW and more.
Check it out.

Depends on what you're comparing. As far as I'm concerned the Pearl Masterworks is the only real custom drum on the planet because you can dictate what each and every ply of each and every drum is. That said, are we comparing four ply maple to four ply maple, four ply maple to six ply maple, birch to birch, finishes, or what?
Here's the thing though. If you ask five different drummers what their favorite brand is, you'll get six different answers. Almost everyone swears that the brand they play is the best on the planet.

I have played both DW and Pearl, and to me, the DWs are harder to tune, their hardware is impossible, nothing holds long enough, and their racks are round. Pearl stays in tune for a long time, their hardware is top notch and durable, and this company, with the help of Jeff Porcaro (is that how you spell it??) invented the rack. Plus, the Masterworks branch of sets that Pearl offers is the only true definition of custom.
To me, the only thing worth comparing between these two companies is their pedals. I honestly cant pick between their pedals. But overall, I'm a pearl hitter. I have an export ex and I plan to keep it forever, because thats how long it will last. I can go through a trillion heads and even more sticks, but i will always have this kit.

Personally I prefer DW. I dig the simplicity of tuning and overall quality. I have owned and played SEVERAL kits and can form honest opinions about all of it. There are always outer influences such as what other ingredients were involved(cymbals, heads, etc) but based on overall quality and drummer friendly; DW. Resale value will make you happy too.

I completely agree that it is just a matter of personal preference. I've always been a Pearl man with my last kit being an Export kit that sounded way better than the sale price would indicate. Today I am picking up my new Pearl Reference kit and am stoked about it. As far as I'm concerned, the Pearl Reference is the king of drums. I would never knock DW because they make great drums with a real rich sound, but they are rather expensive and take a long time to get once you order them. I also am a fan of Tama, Mapex and even some of the new Gretch Catalina Maple kits are pretty awesome. Happy hunting!!! Don't let anybody tell you what to get
