Pimp Your Snare
So I've had this CB Percussion 14"x6" steel snare sitting around for like 9 years now. It came with my first set (the vintage Premiers I'm working on) and I never sold it because nobody around here wanted it and the shipping would be more than the cost of the drum.
When Mars Music went out of business I picked up a Ayotte Drum Smith throw off and butt side. Those sat around for a few years until I drilled some new holes in the CB snare about a year ago. The thing actually sounded good after I did that...okay so it doesn't sound good, but it's bareable.
A couple months ago I picked up the DupilColor green/purple Mirage paint kit for $20 at PepBoys Auto just to see if it looked any good. I had nothing to really spray it on so I dug up the CB snare and sprayed it up over the weekend. I did get a can of DupliColor's Adhesion Promoter to help the base coat stick to the chrome because if it looked like crap in the end I could strip it and still have the chrome finish to try something else on (which I may have to buy another crap snare to test it out on).
Anyways, I just followed the instructions on the cans and it came out pretty good. Someone opened the garage door before the clear coat went on and I didn't see it before I sprayed the clear...so yeah. Then I tried fixing a couple spots...shoulda just left them alone. In the end, it still looks decent. The bad spots are only noticed if you're up close, so if I brought it to a show nobody would see them.
It's pretty cool how the stuff works. The mid-coat is like a pearl. It doesn't really have a visible color, but when you lay down tons of coats you start to see it, which makes the base coat really important. I took a picture after each coat to show how it builds. If the can didn't run out I would have laid down like 20 coats, but I only got 6 down. Then you throw on the clear. After all that I waxed it to protect it and maybe make it shine a little more. I just threw the original hardware back on it and a snare strand that's missing one of the coils (actually came off my old Mars Pro snare). In the end I think I put $35 into a $3 snare (the heads are old and beat, I consider them free at this point), but I did learn stuff and get some more ideas. And it's still got a decent sound to it that I can use in an experimental band I'm working on.
It was hard to get good pictures of the green and the purple because the flash makes it look all green, but I got some with purple highlights in there.

well im not issueing a challenge. but thats the first snare i rebuild and finished like that. and i had fun. also i used auto bodypaint from Autozone haha. grabber geen high gloss and jet black high gloss all engine enamel. i did my whole set like that. and ive done alot more that are nicer since then but havent goten pics of t hem

This is an old snare drum I pimped a while ago. Took everything off, and sand-papered the non-wrinkled sides of the shell. looks pretty sweet with the black hardware, don't you think?
the thing sounds absolutely great too.
Here's another one, cheap-ass ludwig snare, but it sounds okay with good heads. My mom actually helped making the fur thing on it. I haven't glued it on the shell yet, so it doesn't look too smooth, but the idea is good:P
