 tuning question
Hey guys
I have a little trouble here. I have a tama superstar fusion drum set with evans ec2 over remo ambasador. I tune my tom toms to sound just great when i sit behind the kit. but 10 feet in front...they sound like junk. is it a problem? in live situations the mics are right on top the drums. but my guitar player is driving me crazy....hey man, your tome sound like s^^t. and i ask him to join me near the drum set...and he confirms my theory.

 Re: tuning question
Are you muffling ? With what? Muffling can kill they necessary overtones needed to cut threw. It could be the reso heads too. Try tuning them to the same pitch or a quarter turn over same pitch and see if that helps.

 Re: tuning question
no muffling at all. just the edge control ring. they are tunet at aprox. the same pitch.

 Re: tuning question
Lose the rings and tune them so they sound good out front.

 Re: tuning question
He'd have to get new heads to lose the rings. But you probably should be getting new heads for that anyway. EC2's are better for close miking situations in the studio. I'd get some G2 clears or maybe try some of their new Onyx heads. And like Bong said, tune them so they sound good out front, maybe about 20 or so feet away

 Re: tuning question
Ec2 will cut they just need to be tuned right, as in not just above wrinkle, because like any head the low you tune 'em the less they project. Its always a good idea that if you don't like what your hearing, then bring it up a bit and let em sing.

 Re: tuning question
yes. if i tuned both heads to the lowest pitch, i got a "peawwwwww" sound. raised a bottom head a little and also the batter...and my toms sing . if i tap each head without muffling the other, i get the same pitch. but if i listen to each head separately, the bottom is 3 notes higher. but overall, the toms sound great now.

 Re: tuning question
I have another problem now..I seem to not manage to get the same amount of ring out of my tom toms. The 10" is more ringy than the other one. It rings a little bit more. what should I do?

 Re: tuning question
half a moongell if all the lugs are same pitch will help control the sound. But I would try different tunings till you find what you like. The more you tune, the easier it will be to find what you want. I can change my tom heads (5 drums) and have them sounding great in less than an hour and a half.

 Re: tuning question
Tune them higher. It might sound too high from where you're sitting, but they sound great from everywhere else.
I hate the high pitch tones I hear while playing, but I recorded myself playing with a descent camcorder and they sounded great.
