How tight are your wingnuts, how angles/flat are they, what sticks do you use, and how do you hit them?

Re: Why are my cymbals cracking???!!!!
80% playing technique, 19% cymbal mounting, 1% possible cymbal manufacturing flaws. In my opinion 1 & 2.

Re: Why are my cymbals cracking???!!!!
your cymbals are cracking because you're beating the living daylights out of them.
you might also look, as has been mentioned, at how tight the wing nuts are. if the cymbal's not able to move freely, force of impact doesn't have anywhere to go.
what kind of sticks are you using?

Re: Why are my cymbals cracking???!!!!
I stopped using wingnuts all together, and that (coupled with working on better technique) has stopped any of cymbals from breaking.

Re: Why are my cymbals cracking???!!!!
Wing nuts or not, my rule of thumb is... with a small amount of effort, by hand I should be able to move said cymbal up and down 4+ inches either way. While there is no argument about too loose, there is one about too tight.

Re: Why are my cymbals cracking???!!!!
Well, my wing nuts and felts arent really tight at all, and I play heavy, but I dont kill my cymbals so I cant even see them. I use a variety of random 5A/5B's or SD2 Vic Firth Boleros for jazz.NO NYLON TIPS! My basement is pretty damn cold in the winter. Can that be a factor? And thanks for the help guys

Cold is definitely a factor. Metal is very brittle at low temps. Got a heater?

Nylon tips won't make a difference dude. That's a myth. When you hit the cymbal where on the cymbal are you hitting it?

Re: Why are my cymbals cracking???!!!!
I think you need to look at your technique on hitting your cymbals. I play hard as well but I have never experienced what you are talking about. I mean cymbals will crack over time but not that quick. You should have a sweeping motion across the cymbal not straight on up and down motion, if that makes sense? I hit my cymbals hard but since I have a slight sweeping motion across the cymbal when I hit it the force is not applied directly on the cymbal and it does not force the cymbal down and put as much strain on it which is usually why it will crack. You shouldn't be cracking any "rock" model crashes within a month or two. Also another thing to look at is how do you hold your sticks? Loose grip or stiff. If you are not allowing your sticks to rebound you are putting more strain on the surface you are hitting as well. Do you notice that you dent your drum heads a lot?

Re: Why are my cymbals cracking???!!!!
Ive been studying my techique and thats not the problem, neither is my attack and the way I hit. I just figured out I have a bunch of very tiny cracks which now come to think of it, is from the cold temp.My cymbals seem to get EXTREMALLY cold. Come to think of it,my other cheaper cymbals that cracked, just happened to have all cracked in the cold winter months.

Re: Why are my cymbals cracking???!!!!
My guess would be that it may be too large and heavy for your playing style, and your are subsequently clenching your hand around the stick as you swing, causing you to change your grip and restricting free movement of the stick - causing the damage.
