Alot of drummers have a second snare off to the side, usely a smaller size. like if your main snare is a 14 inch, you could have a 10 or 12 inch snare to the side form more of a (crack) sound.

i dont know either lol but i have a few theories:

1) for when you like a snare better with your kit, but another snare better by itself, like in some songs when they move from kit to snare-work etc.
2) extra snare that you dont use as much, but you keep it because
a - selling used drums are never worth it
b - it makes your set look bigger haha

It's always a good idea to have a second snare on the gig in case of breakdowns. Many people also like to have both a deep and shallower drum on the kit so that they have sound choice options on the gig. For example a deep maple snare is great for ballads while a shallower metal snare is good for more poppy or funky tunes.
