 Question about the Zil-bel
Should it be plaxed rightside up or upside down? I see a lot of drummers in magazined putting it inverted.

i use mine with the bell facing down.. so i hit the rim of it.. much louder and more consistant that way.. i tried the other way.. and it was quite and changed the sound way to much..
so basically i have what looks like a bowl of cereal on a boom mount..

You do tend to get more projection that way
The best way to judge it is to mount it both ways and decide for yourself
There are more subtle thiings you can do with it mounted like a regular cymbal though
But
Yeah
It gets more clang when upside down

I play my LP Ice Bells cereal-bowl style and love it. Is the Zil-Bell a similar cymbal by Zildjian, or are you refering to the LP bells and how they look like zils? If someone else makes a bell cymbal, I'd love to try it.

usually see them inverted, I have mine mounted upside down over the bell of my ride, as I use two rides and the bell on one isnt very strong.
Think its just a matter of preference, however if you playing quite fast think its probably easier to hit that way and get a good sound

if you look at my picture to to the left , that little thing on top of my hi-hats is an upside down zil-bel, the one overlapping my snare a little is an lp ice bell. if you want the zil-bel to give you a nice clear tone your gonna have to mount it upside down. mounting it right side up will give you more overtones and wont be quite as loud. putting it upside down will really make it sing. plus having it upside-down makes it easier to hit. The ice bell however i prefer right side up, i haven't been able to get a tone i liked with it mounted upside down.

Check out the Paiste Bell Chime.... It sings, I think you'll love it. It produces a long lasting tone.

when you invert the zil-bel and put it over your ride, you put a spacer (foam, plastic, rubber, whatever? in between the two cymbals, right?
Wouldn't you potentially overwork the metal with the stresses exerted by playing causing it to deform if not fatigue and fracture?

you gotta rock it upside down. this does however have a downside. it tends to help chew through your sticks in a much quicker manner...

Kind of like Tim Alexander of his Primus days?
