 Setting up
Does anyone on here have a specific way they set up their kits for shows and what not? I mean, like a certain method. I use what I call a "square method." I first set up the bass drum, and put on the pedal, then I set up the snare. Next is the hi-hat, so I can put the two pedals at a comfortable distance. Then it's on to the toms. I make sure that my 12" tom, ride, 13" tom, and snare create a "square" after they've been set up. I mean, in piano, I learned the less movement, the better. So I apply that to my drums as well. The way I have my kit set up allows for the least movement from drum to drum. I once saw this dude at a show that had his drums so far apart he looked like he was running a mile just to do a simple 4/4 cross-sticking pattern. Anyway, thoughts?

Yeah,
I go with the kick and pedals, the hi hat stand and then the snare stand in order to protect the driveshaft from being stepped on. Toms and stand next then cymbals. Then I plug in my drums (I use internal micing) and I am ready to go. This is the way I do it every time.....
Yeah, I 'm kinda wierd!

depends on my mood and what my style is at the time, currently im doing the square method, my 14 and snare my a sort of box. but then some times i ues the curve method when i play one of my dads double bass kits i curve the rack toms and make a nice kind of curved of floor toms line.

i set up my rack first which pretty much has placement marks that i can see in my mind. line the resonant side rim of the bass drum up with the middle arm of the 3 sided rack and move it side to side to get the toms evenly spaced on my bass drum with the one connected to the rack. then i just add everything else. usually pedal first then high hat, snare, floor tom, and throne.

without a rack, i go
rug, bassdrum with pedal, rack tom and snare, hi hat and ride, floor tom and then throne, then i place cymbals and adjust to fit needs, and all that good jazz, with rack it all depends on what im playin. i generaly go square method when i play in a 4pc or 1up2down tom setup, but when i play 2 or more toms up i tend to go kind of square on top and then start to curve with the last rack tom and floor toms.

you can be like danny carey and take DMT and meditate on a piece of sacred geometry to find the right setup for your drums.
but if you're not insane, you can just start from the bottom (pedals, hi-hats), go to the center (bass drum, snare), then branch off (toms, cymbals)

first i put my cymbols on their stands and adjust them to an approx. height. Next i set up my bass drum and pedals to make sure that they are in a set ready position. Then i attach my tom to the bass drum and adjust the heigght so it is just where i want it. Then i hit the tom to make sure is doesn't move to much. THen i place my snare drum and floor tom and adjust their height as well. Next i hit the drums to make sure that their tone is just the way that i want them. After this i take my cymbal stand with cymbals and place them in their spot and then sit in my "throne" and adjust them to where i want them. After this i tighten all of the cymbal stand knobs and take out 3 pairs of new vic firth sticks and play for 3 mins to ensure that the kit is just the way i want it. Then im ready.
I know, its really complictaed but, it always works so that the set doesn't move around and my drums work to their full capacility

I've got it down to the point that I'm typically set up well before anyone else in my band. I'm usually ready to mic check while they're still messing with pedals etc.

0yea but if u ever look closely at his kit, he has roman numerals or occult markings or somn on every stans and his tech, joe paul saliby sets it all up
then he puts a little toy monkey on the front of the sonor stands
