Post So A Student Asked Me To Name My Top 25 Favorite Players...
&So...A "prized" student (and in actuality friend & colleague as well as a scolarship'ed "Berkley Brat" nowadays) of mine today asked me after a class to name my top twenty-five Influential/inspirational players...
I've been asked this many times...
Although more of a "Who's your favorite drummer?"...
In which I really cannot answer...There were far too many on my table... ':oI
I answered the question after some "hounding"...And let me tell you...It was a task...
This may help us all "get to know each other" on this forum...
All the best...Barrie ';o]

"Sort of"...However not really in any particular order...
Followed by an "Example artist(s)" they worked with...
But of coarse most of the "studio cats" have an "employer list" beyond belief...

1) Steve Smith (Journey/Jean Luc Ponty)
2) Jeff Porcaro (Boz Skaggs/Toto/Steely Dan)
3) Vinnie Colaiuta (Zappa/Sting/Steely Dan/Jeff Berlin)
4) Rod Morganstein (The Dregs/Winger/Platypus)
5) Neil Peart (Rush/Jeff Berlin)
6) John Bonham (Zeppelin)
7) Stan Lynch (Original Tom Petty Heartbreakers drummer)
8) Narada Michael Walden (Jeff Beck/Mahavishnu Orchestra)
9) Dave Weckl (Chick Corea Electrik Band...The first album freaked me out)
10) Buddy Rich (He's "Buddy")
11) Simon Phillips (Jeff Beck/Stanley Clarke/Jeff's replacement in Toto now)
12) Louie Bellson (He's "Louie")
13) Ian Paice (Deep Purple/Gary Moore)
14) Phil Collins (Brand X/Genesis/Steve Hackett)
15) Tony Williams (Miles & TW Forever)
16) Phil Ehart (Kansas)
17) Bill Bruford (UK/Yes/Earthworks/King Crimson)
18) Steve Gadd (Steely Dan/Paul Simon/Al Dimeola/Stanley Clarke)
19) Bernard Purdie (Steely Dan/Aretha Franklin/Hall & Oats-Early years/BB King)
20) Barriemore Barlow (Jethro Tull-"Live Bursting Out" drummer/Yngwie Malmsteen's "Rising Force"-first album...And he has a "cool name"...lol)
21) Terry Bozzio (Zappa/Missing Persons)
22) Ansley Dunbar (Journey/Zappa/Whitesnake)
23) Don Brewer (Grand Funk Railroad/Bob Seger)
24) Chad Wackerman (IOU/Alan Holdsworth/Zappa)
25) Roger Taylor (Queen)

And Gene Krupa, Charlie Watts and Ringo Starr ARE the reason I play... ';o]
And of coarse a few great teachers and players I feel blessed to have worked with...

How would you'ens answer this little ditty of a question?

Post Re: So A Student Asked Me To Name My Top 25 Favorite Players
Not in any special order...but Smith, Porcaro, and Bonham are my top 3. I've never really been able to really dig into the jazz drummers.....not that I wasn't impressed with some of them....just never enjoyed that style of playing. I know...I suck! Smile
1) Steve Smith (Journey/Jean Luc Ponty)
2) Jeff Porcaro (Boz Skaggs/Toto/Steely Dan)
3) Neil Peart (Rush/Jeff Berlin)
4) John Bonham (Zeppelin)
5) Tony Thompson (Chic, Bowie,Power Station, Robert Palmer, Rod Stewart)
6) Nicko McBrain ( Iron Maiden, Pat Travers)
7) Tommy Aldridge ( Black Oak Arkansas, Pat Travers, Ozzy)
Cool Mike Portnoy
9) Alan White (Yes)
10) Buddy Rich (He's "Buddy")
11) Simon Phillips (Jeff Beck/Stanley Clarke/Jeff's replacement in Toto now)
12) Larrie Londin (Journey, Studio)
13) Sully Erna (Godsmack...great sense of "just a touch of odd time")
14) Phil Collins (Brand X/Genesis/Steve Hackett)
15) Mark Brzcicki (sp?) (Big Country, Studio)
16) Phil Ehart (Kansas)
17) Dennis Davis (David Bowie)
1Cool Steve Gadd (Steely Dan/Paul Simon/Al Dimeola)
19) Bernard Purdie (Steely Dan/Aretha Franklin/Hall & Oats-Early years/BB King)
20) Will Calhoun ( Living Colour)
21) Terry Bozzio
22) Ansley Dunbar (Journey/Zappa/Whitesnake)
23) Vinnie Colaiuta (Zappa/Sting/Steely Dan)
24) Rod Morganstein (The Dregs/Winger/Platypus)
25) Billy Cobham

Duh...
I forgot about Billy (Cobham) and Alan White...
And Jack Dejohnette and Chester Thompson...
And Mark Craney...As well as the Marotta brothers...
And Gil Moore...
As well as Joe Morello...And Chic Webb...And "Uncle Freddy" (Gruber)...
But then there's Tommy Aldridge and Gregg Bissonette...Carl Palmer...
Tom Brechtlein as well as Stewart Copeland...Then there's Bun E. Carlos, "Ndugu" Chancler & Sly Dunbar...
But...Steve Ferrone, Peter "Heavy Weather" Erskine, Manu Katché, Al Foster, Russ McKinnon, Cozy Powell Lenny White...
But we can't forget Dennis Chambers & Clyde Stubblefield...Max Roach...And Weinberg...
And Dave Garbaldi, Ralph Humphrey and Omar Hakim in whom I pretty much worshipped for awhile...Duh...

Okay...I lied...I can't do it...
Dammit!...
Confused

My favorite drummer-

The 8 year old kid who is just starting out. He's invincible in his own mind, he is both the world's greatest drummer and the world's worst drummer rolled into one and he knows it. It's with that mindset that he continues to motor on through hours of practice and getting his act together for the brass ring- A BAND.

I miss those days. Pablo Picasso once said "For years I have trained to paint as a master but for a lifetime I have striven to see art as through the eyes of a child".

I can relate......

LOL...
The exact same student once asked me, "Who do you think the greatest drummer ever is?"...
I looked up from writing for a moment and said, "You, if you play your cards correctly."
I remember answering that question a different time with, "Most likely some poor guy by the name of Joe working at a gas station in Arkansas. He's just getting off work about now to go home and practice."...(The Zappa "Joe's Garage" and "Wind Up Working At A Gas Station" came to mind that day)
Or one of my teachers answering a similar question from myself when I was a lad with, "Who cares Barrie!!! They're all good in one way or another!!! Just play the damn chart and watch your Moeller whips!!!!"... Shocked
Louie was a grouch...Confused
But a "fluffy" grouch...lol
But I think his blood pressure killed him... Rolling Eyes
'tis true really...
The best players we may never hear...
All the best...Barrie

1. Dave Grohl (His work on No One Knows inspired me to pick up the sticks)
2. Morgan Rose (Great drummer and does backing voacls at the same time, what more can he do?)

4. Roy Mayorga (One of the few drummers that can make slow tempos so energetic)
5. Danny Carey (The best technical drummer of today)
6. Neil Peart (One of the first drummers to completely blow me away)
7. Derek Roddy (A metal drummer that can do a lot more than just blast)
8. John Bonham (A hard hitter and good groove maker)
9. Vinnie Paul (Chops can't get much more solid than his)

12. Marco Minneman (Showed the world the power of 4-way independance)
13. Chris Pennie (His polyrhythms and ostinattos continue to blow me away)
