 Sometimes....
I laugh at the appalling state of record label manufactured music/shite.
Today at workl we're doing a "boybands weekend" so I have to play loads of chesy boyband "hits", and sound happy about it.
Just played a tune by Let Loose, called Crazy for You. So I do a bit of prep and see that one of Let Looses talking points was that they had a drummer.... intrigued I start the song.... If they're real drums, I'm the next Steve Gadd.
People actually buy that, that's what's sad!

I've always wondered what that would be like, playing songs that you don't like as your job. Gotta be tough.

The media (TV radio THE MUSIC INDUSTRY Internet) makes me sick.
all these fooking boybands, rappers, "pop".... they are all aload of shit... they all have no talent, or very little... just using computers and little boxes to make "music"... and all the mainstream, one track, single minded people go and buy it. It is discusting. Yeah, im 18... what was funny the other day, some chav got into a fight with me cause i was in an indie/rock band, he must of been fucked in the head cause he comes up blaring all aload of crap about hardcore (not the punk) being better than the shit i play, so i told him to get a life and he full on smacked me.
Is it jealously, degradation of mmorals? makes me sick that the media, and popular culter have glamourised rappers and all that crap. but i guess the problem is its cure, what would us talented musicians write about if there were no problems.
We are all a part of a huge social problem.
rant over

Bands today don't need talent so they don't bother with it. All they need is a computer and voilą, you've got "music".
And as for live performances, I mean come on. What happened to showmanship??

There is plenty of talent and even more great bands; perhaps should check out some different artists.

Oh, the part about my job I dislike the most is playing music I really don't care for. I'm not even on a format that I even remotely like! COUNTRY-WESTERN!
...but it pays the bills...
...would be nice if it bought me a new drum kit...
...from PJ...
I know exactly what you mean man. When I do prep, it's usually who won what award for whatever show, or this person grew up with this influence...blah blah blah....I've all but quit talking about the music and I just usually backsell/frontsell it. In and out in 30 minutes...

Yeah, I dont like mainstream music but I dont like to bust on people who are devoted to it. The way I look at it:
music is a passion. Just like all passions people's dedication to it differ. Some people are happy to accept what is given to them through easy access just how some of us are okay with watching the movies that simply come out in theatres. They're happy with what enters there ears and therefore do not have to search for anything else. They're happy.
Others are not satisfied at all with what we hear as we pass the simple route so we choose to dig and search and probe for what does satisy our musical preference. When we find it, we charish it. We are happy.
Either way you look at it, the end result is people happy with music.
That being said, having to play songs that I thought sucked balls would bug the living crap outta me. haha. But endure. Playing is an awesome way to pay the bills. Period.

I'm a radio presenter. Sometimes I fill in on a little station called Kick Fm in Newbury. (Generally I do a national school station and Game computer stores, both of which play no rap and quite of lot of credible music).
The current trend for comercial stations are weekends that are "themed" hence why I was playing lots of boybands. Having said that we put a twist on it by including bands such as the Beetles and groups like The Jackson 5, so it wasn't all bad. It was just that the really cheesy 90's boyband stuff that really makes me cringe!
We all love every song we play on the radio trstn, I announce bands like "nSync" with the same pasison as I would Dave Matthews Band... HONEST! Why else do you think we play the same songs over and over, it's because we love them.. haha!
I'm fortunate in that I can appreciate most music, even country.
As for current bands not having to have talent I don't believe that's true. Some bands are straight up manufactured yes, but still play live which requires talent. Other bands are genuine bands that have been "nurtured" by labels/managers/producers etc.
If you want to make a decent run of things you will have to accept some kind of outside control at some point.
