 Tama Superstar
Okay so, I've been looking into buying a kit.
At the moment, I'm liking Tama Superstars, partly because theres a cheap shellpack up on the site I'm on. But, I'm wondering, would I be better with a Tama Superstar, or a Pearl Forum series kit?
Thanks guys

old superstars were really good drums, if a bit thick-shelled for my tastes. I've never played the newer version.

I'd go with the Superstars. They have much nicer features than the Forum series and sound very good. Tama has really done a nice job with the Superstar line. True, they are not the same as the 70s-80s Superstars, but they are great drums for the money.

I like my Superstar Custom kit is so much, I got a second Superstar kit for practice. The Custom version has a beautiful finish! What makes it so great? The features I can not do without: 1) Die cast rims instead of flanged rims, 2) the "Star Cast" mounting system, 3) Birch wood, and 4) the Custom finish.
My last kit was a Pearl Forum and I'll never buy another Pearl kit because it sounded so lousy. Even on their higher end sets I think Pearl put holes in their toms for the tom mounts and use crappy flanged rims.
Gig Set: Tama SL52F Superstar Custom Fusion - Scarlet Fade
Practice Set: Tama SX42 Superstar EFX - White Satin Haze

There is a lot of misunderstanding about flanged rims. 2.3mm flanged hoops are not completely rigid which is why they are desirable. Playing a rim-shot on the same drum with a diecast hoop will result in much more shock than if played with a flanged hoop. On high end pearl kits all hoops are 2.3mm or diecast. Extremely thin flanged rims (1.6mm) like on the pearl forum are useless because they bend so much, but 2.3 flanged hoops are good. Diecast hoops also tend to box in the sound while flanged rims open up the sound a bit. Anyways... flanged rims are not always crappy and many people prefer them over diecast (myself included).
