taped cymbals?

how come metal drummers duct tape the bottom of their cymbals? does it make them sound any better. tell me.

Usually it's to kill them during video shoots where the drums are the only live instrument. Other times it's to dry a cymbal out and/or make it quieter.

I can see someone doing it to alter the sound but 99% of the time it is exactly how Garret explained
