Taye Studiomaple, or Mapex Saturn - Which would you choose?
Hello everyone!
I've narrowed my search down to two choices. The taye studiomaple, and the Mapex saturn. I can't decide which one to get. They both seem to be great sets.
What do ya all think?
Rob

I haven't had the chance to play the Taye kit, but I own a Saturn Series kit and all I can say is that you won't be disappointed. Dark full tone will clarity of attack. Great sounding drums. I love to play them. Sometimes I think of changing my kit to a premium one like Yamaha Maple custom, but then again, I'm satisfied with this kit.
Maybe I'll change someday. Someday meaning when I'll hear a drumkit that sounds better acoustically compared with the Saturn. The search continues

I'd take a mapex over a taye in general. I havent tried those two specific kits. but I'd say maypex based on my knowledge of the two companies.

Taye have very thin shells made from North American Sugar Maple. They're also made by Ray Ayotte a very well known and renowned custom drum builder.
The Taye Studio Maple series is also relatively cheap for a high-end set. All Taye drums are cheap when compared to other makers actually. Despite the thin shells they're very sturdy, rigid, and have a great sound.
Now, I know I probably sound like I'm an endorser and what not, and I am NOT one. Personally I play Pearl. But everyone seemed to be a little bit biased in my opinion due to Taye being relatively new to the drumming market. I suggest that you go to a local store and play the drums yourself. Only you will know what you want in a drum.
Happy hunting!

The reason Taye are cheap is because they use a standard hardware on ALL their lines of drums. The lugs on the beginner sets up to the professional sets are the same. This was a move by Ayotte to keep the drums affordable, he designed most of the hardware himself so you can be assured of its quality. If companies like Pearl and Tama kept one type of lug for all it would cut down on costs of manufacturing quite considerably and would probably lower their prices too.
However, the Taye lines all vary in their shell construction. The shells are all of a very high quality so you can be assured of having a seriously quality kit if you go for the studio maple.
The Saturn obviously is getting out there more and more and you won't have to look hard to find a great review, great drums too.
Basically its a win win situation for you.
