Post Tuning question for a Pearl Maple Free Floater 14in X 6.5in.
Hey everyone! This is actually my first post here but have lurked for a little while. Smile

Anyways my question is, I have the snare drum listed in the subject. Currently I have it tuned very tight with a remo coated emperor on top and a clear snare emperor on the bottom. I tune it as close to Chad Sextons snare sound as I can w/o getting a OCD vented snare. But I'm thinking about changing my sound a little now to more of a looser but still quick and responsive, somewhat, if that makes sense Laughing

To get an idea of the sound rather than me ramble and try to explain it just go to this group Floratone's myspace here: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=215298004 and listen to the first 2 songs and check out the sounds of Matt Chamberlains snare. I have a feeling my snare would be a little more crisper but that's ok. I'm just looking for advice on a good way to tune the top and bottom as far as tension is concerned and also if you could point me in the direction of top and bottom heads for the snare to help achieve that sound.

Thanks in advance guys!!! Very Happy

Dan

First, welcome to the board.

Second, I dig that snare sound. Very open and vintage. I would recommend trying out a Remo Fiberskyn 3 on your snare with no muffling. Even when you tune these heads tightly, they still provide a very warm, resonant tone. For the bottom head, what you have will probably work fine. I would keep it relatively tight. Good luck.

And don't drive yourself too far into the state of insanity in an effort to get a snare (or drum) sound that you hear on a studio recording.

i don't plan on doing that  i'm just looking for a good sound that i can play indoors in the basement practice room as well as the occasional mic up if i happen to go into the studio with a new group i'm starting to jam with Smile

i failed to mention my drum style....my style is a mix of mainly funk/jazz/reggae/rock Laughing I have my toms tuned more tighter with a nice quick attack tone...kinda jazz/funky Very Happy

I have a 6.5" Maple FF. I have always had an Ambassador snare side and 16 strand Puresounds, but the stock wires sound great. My batter head is a coated G2 or Emperor. This combo would do the high and tight thing well, but is really shines at the medium tight tuning. It really fattens up and gets that ring like you hear on the recording. You don't need to change anything, just your tuning.

To really nail that sound, try a medium to medium-tight batter (about 90 on the drum dial) and medium reso (80 pounds). Have the snares just tight enough to not be loose and sloppy, but nowhere near choking the drum, either. The Emperor reso will be darker and more sustainy than an Ambassador, so your drum should sound extra fat!
