 Wallet
This may be an old trick but I just learned it. Take you wallet and put it on your snare head toward the rim. It sounds awsome.

Yeah i've done it. but i started to get a weird reverb that i didnt like.

same thing as putting a remo ring on the head. Takes away the overtones of the head.

you could always hit a live bison with a stick! very flat sound. verry little ring/overtones!

In a somewhat related direction
Fill your bass drum with shredded newspaper
It only muffles the head after the pieces settle down after the initial hit
kinda like a noise gate

yeah ive tried the bison and it works great
i put my cat patches in the bass and it gave it a doink sound
im kidding i would never do that to patches
