A snare bed is a shallow, gradual relief cut in the bottom bearing edge of a snare drum, at the area where the snare wire straps cross the bearing edge to meet the throwoff and butt end. When tightened, the drum head will follow the snare bed contour, allowing the snare wires to make contact with the head in the center of the shell diameter.
how to make a good one- have a drum builder do it for you or else there is a 99% chance you'll end up with a ruined shell if this isnt something you have done a few times before to get the proper depth and contour.
you say you have all the tools and everything so hopefully you have a proper tool for doing the bearing edges at whatever degree you decide to do them at so you dont end up ruining the shell doing that either.
botton snare heads- thin! these are for resonance. you dont want to deaden these. remo ambassador, evans g1's evans hazy 300's ect.
snare wire. im personaly a fan of puresound wires but tons of companies make wires out there. you just have to look through the differant options these companies offer and find what will suit the style of music you play and also what will be best for your drum.
have fun building your snare and be very carefull cutting the bearing edges, snare beds and lig holes. a small mess up will leave you with a ruined shell.
