What is Your Height & Your Throne's Height While Playing
This recent NAMM 2008 post begun by Atmerrill Quote:I'm sitting about 23" up. Yeah, I tend - even with a 22" inch bass drum, to sit almost even with the height of the bass drum. I just never got accustomed to playing "up" to the toms and cymbals - always seemed like it was a waste of effort. At 23 or 24", you're playing down to the toms, ride cymbal and floor toms. Over the years, I've grown to like the ride cymbal on the bass - flick your wrist, and there it is. Probably that Buddy & Louie influence.
I think Cobham and Chester Thompson sit at like 26" - that's really high. gave my OCD having as* the idea to ask this question of all of youse nice guys!
Using a tape measure, my 2 Questions are: How tall are you without shoes? And How High (in inches) is the sitting surface of your drum throne from the ground? I ask your height because it will indicate throne height relative to leg length. After 20yrs of playing, I believe there is an Ideal sitting height range for optimal heel up AND heel down playing @ the same time.
I am 5'11" & my Roc N' Soc Nitro ride throne's seating surface is fixed @ 23" from the ground! Thanx! [/i]

my throne is 20(give or take an inch), im about 5'9
it's working great for me, my bass rum is 22 though so its not noticeably higher
my thigh goes down slightly too. i havent had any muscle problems yet so i think i'll keep it this way.
good luck though man, im sure it might be hard finding the right position

When I play I find that it's most comfortable and appropriate when you sit, that your thighs and legs reach a 90 degree angle so it's not too high which can force you to push forward rather than dwnward and when it's too low you will hit the rims of your snare and floor tom by accident.

 Seat Height
Hey Alexander,
Thanks for starting this thread.
I'm 5'7, 23" inches.
For those who are curious, Buddy was 5'6, sat at 24", and Louie is also 5'6 sitting around 23".

Anyone else care to measure their throne height & height? MY OCD compells me to collect & analyze such data!
Another reason I asked is because I noticed many stool maufacturers seem to have a common min/max adjustable range of 18" - 24". There are definitely exceptions but 18"-24" is the average range. I figure this is one nuance of drumset setup that should be found & fixed for a lifetime for consistent & optimal playing @ one's kit! Thanx!

I'm just under 6 ft. (shrinking as I get older), and my seat is at 21". My drums are somewhat low, I gave up playing "up" to my drums early 90s'. Much more comfortable playing to, or down on the skins.

I have my drums set up to where my snare's flat and exactly where my arms are if my elbows are at a 90 degree angle. Ride cymbal pretty close to that level, rack tom pretty low and flat, floors pretty much exactly like the snare, hihats not too high, neither is my crash cymbal. I sit a bit above where my knees would be at a 90 degree angle a la Bellson/Rich/every other oldschool jazz cat. My stool height is 27-28 inches, but I have long legs. I'm 6ft2.

6'4" and my throne is set right now at 21". It is lower than usual but it's not staying in place. Usually run it around 22 to 23".

unfortunately my throne isnt at home... its at the practice space fr my band. but i can say im 6'1'' and my throne is at the absolute highest adjustment that it has. (its a lame cb percussion beginner cheapo throne with holes and a peg). my throne is high enough to where my guitarist, who is about 5'9'' can barely reach the pedals when sitting on it.... i have long legs from the knee down.
