What kit did Dave Grohl play in Nirvana?
I know he used Tama, but it's not a starclassic or anything like that, it almost looks like a superstar or something like that. Does anyone actually know?

In the early days, it was probably just a rockstar, or a swingstar or something like that. Not completely sure, but that's what it looks like in the videos.

he switched on and off between Tama and Yamaha. I don't know which Yamaha model he used, but his Tamas were older Swingstar and Rockstar models. Usually 22x16" or 22x18" bass, 14x14" rack tom and 16x16" floor tom. His snare was usually a 14x10 wood, but I don't know if it was a Tama or what.

all i know was that everything was huge! and it sounded fant-abulous. I do know that Steve Albini recorded all of it with just Sure SM57's, everything else was a matter of production (i.e. compression, gate, reverb, etc.)
i love the sound of those drums...over everything. EVERYTHING!

It was a Tama Artstar II, the kick was 22x16 99% of the time although he did occasionally use a 24X18. He alternated between a 14X8 maple and a 14X6.5 steel or brass snare mostly. Rack was 14x14 or 14x15. Floor was either 16x16 or 16x18.
Hats were 14' new beats for most tours and he alternated with 15's sometimes. His crashes were 16" and 18" (and after recording In Utero a 17" on his left hand side near hats) Zildjian A Medium crashes. Also his ride for most tours was a 20" A medium.
Sometimes these sizes of drums and cymbals were different depending on availabilty of hire etc same reason he used a yamaha occasionally live.
As for heads, on the toms Dave used Clear Pinstripe batters and Clear Ambassador Resonants, bass drum was Clear Powerstroke II Batter and an Ebony Ambassador Resonant w/ Tama logo, and the Snare was a Clear Ambassador with ambassador snare side.
Albini did not record the kick drum with a shure 57, and cymbals and room mics were all condensors microphones not dynamic such as a 57.
