Post What ways can you make an old cymbal sound unique?
I'm buying new cymbals and redoing my entire set-up. So I was thinking on making my old cymbals that came with my set into custom cymbals. I was thinking of hammering heavily of bending the edge or making them in a wave like style and see what they sound like and if they are really cool than I'll keep them or if they are okay but not worth keeping sell for money for new additions to my set.

So what other ways do you guys customize your cymbals or other ideas you've had?

Depends on how much you want to alter the sound. I'd say anything from adding rivits to drilling holes to cutting sections out. I'w definitely do some research before hand though. Good luck. Peace on ya!

stacking them would be the most harm free option, i would say try stacking them in all the different options and then with each little customization stack, stack again. because u dont want to rush and go past a great option, although that is often what i do with everything, i just dont want to see u make the same mistake!

i have attempted stacking with broken crashes and splashes, but it never worked out for me.

are you supposed to put a felt between the two cymbals?

Me and my friend tried that with one of my other friend's cymbals. It was so terrible that it didn't even have a logo. We melted it with a blow torch and hammered it a lot. Now, it looks way cooler, but sounds even worse.

i tried stacking a broken 8'' splash over a broken 10'' splash once and put a couple felts in between so it had a washy hi hat sound. it sounded cool, but volume was too low to use it with a whole band playing.

Drill holes close to the edges, put some nuts and bolts and make the rattle, add a sizzler thing by pro-mark I think.

I brought my old sunlite crash outside, set it on a barrel and wacked it like 100 times, it looks like a pro line cymbal but sounds like you had someone hold china with their hands and hit their hands.

Attach tambourine jingles or rivets. Experiment with different metals and different amounts.

i'm considering doing this with an old ZXT.

it's got a foot long crack parallel to the edge, so i'm thinking of just cutting the cymbal into a smaller cymbal, sanding down the edges, and adding rivets for an effects cymbal.
