 which drum set for metal/hardrock?
intermediate drummer, looking for a set (shell set) to buy... Just wondering what brand and all that I should buy. Have zildjian cymbals, double bass pedal, just need some shells... budget is probably around 1000... more or less.

There's no brand that is specific to metal or hard rock. Mapex, Pearl, Tama, PDP, all of them will work.

ludwig, yamaha, ayotte, sonor
take my sarcasm constructively. the heads and size of the drum affect the sound MUCH more than what brand they are.

you could play death metal on a fisher price kit.....as long as you know how to play death metal.
don't try and give a brand a genre.....pick one that you like the looks of, the quality vs. price, and worry more about being able to play the genre you are interested in more than the name on your kit.
most metal/rock players seem to like Tama, Mapex, Pearl, and that sort of thing though - to actually be as "on-topic" as possible

Buy the brand that makes you feel all warm fuzzy inside and will inspire you when you sit down behind the kit.

depends on what kind of sound you're looking for. there's quite a few threads on here about this subject. I'm personally fond of the thin shell with reinforcing ring setup in terms of shell construction. I like the shells on my old ludwigs, and they're poplar sandwiched in between plies of maple.

Birch or maple is a good way to go, yeah...
Go with bigger dimensions if you'll be playing metal and hard rock and such.
